GRIP 07
GRIP Rebooking & Referrals
You already paid to win this customer once. Stop paying to replace them.
Everybody spends their marketing money chasing strangers while their past customers quietly go somewhere else. The person who already hired you, already trusts you, and already knows what you charge is the cheapest job you will ever book. This is the system that brings them back on schedule and asks them, at the right moment, to send you somebody like them.
WHY THIS MATTERS
A repeat customer costs nothing to win. You just have to ask.
Some businesses live and die on this. A colorist's income is not new clients, it is the same head of hair every seven weeks for fifteen years. Miss the rebook and you did not lose one appointment, you lost a decade of them and everyone that client would have referred.
It matters in the ones people do not think of as repeat businesses too. A mover moves the same family again in four years and their parents next spring. A detail shop should see the same car quarterly. The customer who was happy is already sold, and the only reason they do not come back is that nobody reminded them.
Referrals work the same way. Almost every satisfied customer would happily recommend you and almost none of them will spontaneously think to. The ask is the entire mechanism, and hardly anybody makes it.
Your best customer is the one you already have. Most businesses never ask them twice.
HOW IT WORKS
Bring them back before they drift .
01
Set the real interval
Every business has a natural repeat cycle. Six weeks for color, quarterly for detailing, annually for a service check, a few years for a move. We set the interval per service instead of blasting one generic list, because a reminder that arrives at the wrong time gets ignored and trains people to ignore the next one.
02
The rebook ask happens at the finish
The strongest moment to book the next appointment is while you are finishing the current one. Where that works, the system prompts it there and confirms by text. Where it does not, the reminder fires at the right point in the cycle instead.
03
Reminders that reduce no-shows
Confirmation when it is booked, a reminder before it happens, an easy way to reschedule. Every no-show is an hour of your capacity destroyed, and capacity is the thing you cannot make more of.
04
The referral ask, timed properly
After a good job and after a good review, not before. A short message that makes it easy to pass your name along. Asking a happy customer once is normal. Asking a customer you have not delivered for yet is how you become the business people avoid.
05
Win back the ones who drifted
Customers who have not been back in noticeably longer than their normal cycle get a different message, one that acknowledges it has been a while. This list is usually the largest untouched pile of money in the entire business and almost nobody works it.
RETENTION QUESTIONS
Retention questions, answered .
Stuff buyers ask before they book.
- My business is one-and-done. Does this apply to me?
- Less than for a salon, but more than you think. Even one-time services generate referrals, reviews, and occasional repeat work, and the referral half of this is where your value is. If you genuinely have no repeat and no referral potential, I will tell you to skip this one.
- Isn't this just email marketing?
- No. Email marketing blasts a list on a calendar. This fires per customer based on where they are in their own cycle. The message goes out because it has been seven weeks since their appointment, not because it is the first Tuesday of the month.
- How do I ask for a referral without being weird about it?
- Ask once, right after you have delivered something they are happy with, and make it specific. Not do you know anybody. Instead, if you know somebody dealing with the same thing, send them my number. Specific asks get acted on. Vague ones get a polite nod.
- Should I pay people for referrals?
- You can, and it is usually unnecessary. Most people refer because they like you and want to be helpful, not for a discount. If you do offer something, keep it small and make sure it is legal in your industry, because some licensed trades have real rules about this.
- What if I do not have a customer list?
- Then step one is building one, which we do as part of setup out of your invoices, your phone, your booking app, and whatever else you have. Most owners have a customer list scattered across four places and have simply never had it in one.
